Childhood constipation is a growing global problem that causes significant suffering for children and a heavy burden on families. Despite this, the condition is still surrounded by numerous myths and misconceptions that directly hinder effective treatment.

A recent scientific review by Sámán Rajindrajith and his colleagues sheds light on how these erroneous beliefs lead not only to unnecessary tests but also can cause serious psychological and physical harm to children. Let’s look at the most common myths and the reality behind them!

Myth 1: "Constipation is a rare problem in children."

Many people still believe that chronic childhood constipation is an isolated phenomenon. On the contrary, the reality is that approximately 9.5% of the world's children struggle with this condition. This is an extremely common problem that affects many families.

Myth 2: "It must be caused by some organic disease."

Even some professionals tend to assume that there is some serious organic (organikus) change behind it. However, research proves that organic disorders are very rare. In the majority of children, we can speak of functional constipation (funkcionális székrekedés), which in most cases develops due to the intentional retention of stool. Most of the routinely ordered medical examinations actually do not even help with the treatment.

Myth 3: "The child will grow out of it; nothing will be wrong."

One of the most harmful general beliefs is that children get over constipation by themselves, without long-term problems. Evidence shows that the poorly treated condition has significant bowel and psychological consequences. It affects the child's quality of life and can adversely influence their future health.

Myth 4: "It’s enough if they drink more water and eat a lot of fiber."

Many parents still expect a miracle exclusively from changing the diet—increasing fiber and water intake. The study points out that most non-pharmacological interventions alone are not effective in the daily management of childhood constipation.

Myth 5: "Laxatives destroy the bowels in the long term."

The fear of prolonged treatment holds many back from appropriate therapy, because they are afraid that laxatives lead to colon dysfunction. However, the study and the new guidelines clearly state: the use of laxatives is the primary and most important treatment strategy. In reality, it is the inappropriate, too-short treatment that maintains the problem.

If the study also supports it, let’s not be afraid of laxation—but let’s choose the natural path!

Since modern medicine also confirms that the use of laxatives is necessary and safe, parents can take a sigh of relief. For those who prefer gentle, natural solutions, natural mineral waters and bitter waters are an ideal choice.

The classic solution: Hunyadi János bitter water

Hunyadi János bitter water helps with the problem not with artificial compounds, but through its natural active ingredients, with a purely physical mechanism of action:

  • Osmotic pressure and dilution: The increased fluid volume dilutes the bowel contents, which triggers a gentle mechanical stimulus.
  • Stretch-tension effect: The fluid retained in the bowel physically stimulates the bowel wall.
  • Smooth muscle stimulation: The hydrogen sulfide formed from sulfates naturally stimulates the smooth muscles of the bowel wall, starting the bowel movement.

Application: Diluted consumption is recommended for rapid laxation, while it is suggested without dilution for longer treatment. It acts without abdominal cramps, and no habituation develops.

Gentler alternatives for children and babies: Ferenc József, Mira, and Mira Baby

In the case of older children, it may be worth starting with even gentler solutions. For example, Ferenc József mineral water acts more softly, more gently, so it adapts excellently to the more sensitive digestive system. Similarly, Mira mineral water is a great alternative that also helps normalizes digestion without drastic effects.

No need to despair even with very small children: Mira Baby is the best choice for them. This variant is specifically recommended for the gentle treatment of the smallest ones, so it provides safe, natural help in normalizing digestion already in the earliest life age.

Practical tip for parents: How to overcome the tastes?

Natural mineral and bitter waters have a characteristic, often explicitly bad, bitter taste that the majority of children reject at first. You don't have to fight a battle every single time, though!

The effect of the mineral water does not decrease if we use a little "disguise": you can calmly mix the necessary amount into the child's favorite soft drink or fruit juice. Thus, the taste experience will be much more friendly, the little ones accept it more easily and stress-free, and the natural active ingredients will have their blessed, bowel-movement-assisting effect all the same.
